About the Film

Based on Yiddish folk tales by Sholem Aleichem that inspired Fiddler on the Roof, TEVYE tells the story of a philosophical milkman in a small Ukrainian ghetto community called Anatevka. "Blessed" (or cursed) with five daughters Tevye is intent on finding them all matches, but Khave falls for son of a Ukrainian peasant, pitting Tevye's love for his daughter against his deep-seated faith and loyalty to tradition - a harbinger of a changing world. Tevye's world is a microcosm of the larger world of Russian Jewry in the early 1900s. TEVYE was produced by and stars Maurice Shwartz who helped introduce the works of Sholom Alecheim to the American public. Long believed lost, the film negatives were rediscovered and restored in 1978 by the National Center for Jewish Film.

"With all due respect to Zero Mostel and Topol in Fiddler on the Roof, it was Maurice Schwartz, the great Yiddish actor/director, who first showed Tevye the Dairyman in his full light as a mensch for all seasons. A rare opportunity to see Schwartz in what may have been his most magnificent role." - Judy Stone, San Francisco Chronicle
