About the Film
THE JAZZ BARONESS explores the unlikely relationship between the wealthy granddaughter of Britain's first Jewish member of Parliament, Pannonica (Nica) de Rothschild, and jazz genius Thelonious Monk. This remarkable woman left her illustrious family after WWII for the US to devote herself to the cause of nurturing New York's fragile jazz elite (i.e., Monk and Charlie Parker), who struggled both artistically in a racist culture and personally with drug addiction and mental health issues. Despite their implausibly different backgrounds, Nica became Monk's muse inspiring at least 12 jazz pieces.
Directed by Nica's great-niece, Hannah Rothschild, THE JAZZ BARONESS features archival footage and interviews with Sunny Collins, Quincy Jones, Curtis Fuller, The Duchess of Devonshire and Clint Eastwood. Academy-Award winning actress Helen Mirren narrates in Nica's own words to create a lyrical portrait of this unlikely partnership.
