About the Film
Breaking News! AJAMI was just nominated for an Academy Award! AJAMI is a gritty, urban crime drama that tells the interwoven stories of Jewish, Muslim and Christian neighbors living in bloody disharmony in Israel's impoverished Jaffa neighborhood. The sweeping cast of characters - illegal workers, gangs, drug dealers, revenge squads, corrupt police, clandestine lovers - are all vividly portrayed by non-professional actors from Jaffa. Their disparate stories are tied together by a revenge killing and drug deal gone bad. The film shuttles back and forth through time with interlocking events witnessed by different characters, shifting audience perceptions and responses. AJAMI was co-written, directed & edited by a Jewish Israeli, Yaron Shani, and a Palestinian Christian, Scandar Copti, chronically over the course of 8 years. Winner of the Israeli Academy Award for Best Film and short-listed for an Academy Award in the Best Foreign Language category. Warning: some violence, criminal and drug themes.
Note: AJAMI Encore screening March 25th at WA State History Museum in Tacoma: Info. No discounts.
