On a stormy December night in 2006, 23-year-old Amy Winehouse arrived in Dingle, a remote town in southwestern Ireland and host of the acclaimed Other Voices music festival. There she took the stage of the tiny St. James’ Church and gave a searing, once-in-a-lifetime acoustic concert, backed only by her guitarist and bass player, wowing the crowd of 80 with confident, stripped-down, renditions of the songs that were about to launch her into international stardom. “It was just brilliant,” said the music producer Aoife Woodlock, “that she came with her spindly little legs and her mental hair and sang her heart out… For us.”

Afterward, in an unguarded and revealing interview over a plate of oysters at a nearby pub, a relaxed and happy Amy spoke with surprising charm and sparkling enthusiasm about her music and influences—among them Mahalia Jackson, Sarah Vaughan, Thelonius Monk, Ray Charles, and the Shangri-Las, all shown in rare footage.

This documentary, originally made for Irish television, also includes recollections from some of the people who were involved that day, including her bass player Dale Davis, her taxi driver Paddy Kennedy, and Reverend Mairt Hanley of St. James’ Church. Whether or not you’re an Amy Winehouse fan, you can’t help but be enchanted by this passionate, sensitive artist with a unique style and incredible voice who always saw herself as an outsider.
