About Our Opening Night Film

Unexpected romance blooms when ambitious Berliner Hanna goes to Israel for selfish motives to work with the mentally disabled. When her dreamy and sensitive Israeli colleague, Itay, whose family left Germany, starts commenting on that country’s conflicted history and the Holocaust, tensions arise, but so does romance. As headstrong Hanna begins to fall for flirtatious Itay, she also becomes more interested in both German history and the history of her own family, particularly her own mother’s journey in Israel.

Based on a novel by Theresa Bäuerlein, HANNA’S JOURNEY is an evocative examination of the attitudes of third-generation young Germans and Israelis toward the Holocaust.

About the Festivities

6:30 PM Happy Hour in the AMC lobby: no host

Exhibit: “Jewish Life in Germany Today,” initiated and sponsored by the German Embassy in Washington, and co-organized by the Stroum JCC and the Consulate General of Germany in San Francisco. Numerous panels from this larger exhibition will be on display throughout the festival in celebration of 50 years of diplomatic relations between Germany and Israel, telling the stories of Jewish authors, rabbis, entrepreneurs, students and community members who live in Germany today. Since the early 1990s, the Jewish population in Germany has grown sixfold and Berlin has become a magnet for young Israelis, and about 20,000 young Jews have chosen to live in Germany's capital - the subject of our Opening Night Film.
